Bull Cottage
A Studio for a Teacher
Rural Workshop led the design and construction of a self-contained studio at Bull Cottage, created to serve as both a private tutoring space and a guest suite with a kitchenette and shower room. The project involved transforming a dilapidated 50-year-old garage, which featured medium-density concrete blockwork and a sagging felt roof, into a modern and fully functional studio.
The design process focussed on making the most of the existing structure while ensuring the new building would be durable, energy-efficient, and in keeping with the surrounding environment. The existing roof was replaced with a durable EPDM membrane to ensure long-lasting performance, while the entire building was wrapped in eco-therm insulation to enhance thermal efficiency and create a comfortable interior.
Externally, the building was finished with feather-edge timber cladding, complemented by reclaimed wood fascia boards, further emphasizing the project’s commitment to sustainability. The original roof tiles from the main house were re-used in the studio’s elevation to tie the new structure harmoniously into its context.
The design also prioritized natural light, with an open-plan layout that maximized the flow of light and air throughout the space. The 40 sqm space was thoughtfully organized to accommodate a well-sized tutoring area, kitchenette, and shower room, making it an ideal retreat for both work and relaxation.
The project was carefully considered in collaboration with the client to ensure all practical needs were met while also achieving a high standard of aesthetic and environmental quality. The finished studio not only added functional living space to Bull Cottage but also demonstrated Rural Workshop’s ability to deliver a sustainable, bespoke design solution that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly practical.
