Keepers Cottage
From Tree to Cabin
Keeper’s Cottage represents a deeply collaborative and holistic approach to eco-building, combining sustainable forestry practices with precision craftsmanship.
The project began with a sustainable forestry process, where the team—under expert guidance—learned to fell, extract, and mill trees from the site itself and Wilderness Wood. This hands-on approach not only provided the raw materials but also established a profound connection between the landscape and the finished building.
The timber was skillfully transformed into a detailed frame during an intensive course led by renowned craftsman John Russell. This collaborative effort fused traditional and roundwood techniques, yielding a striking frame that embodies both innovation and craftsmanship. The synergy between architect and craftsmen was evident, with each contributing expertise to create a structure that reflects both creative vision and respect for the craft. The sense of teamwork was deeply fulfilling, highlighting a shared commitment to excellence.
From its conceptual roots to the final nail, Keeper’s Cottage demonstrates how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can come together to create something truly special.
Rural Workshop played a key role in both the design and construction phases of the studio, collaborating closely with Dan Morrish to translate sketch designs into detailed construction drawings using Vectorworks. From the initial tree selection to the final shingle laid, Rural Workshop was engaged throughout, largely contributing to its successful completion.
