Toad Hall

A Garden Sanctuary

Among the whispering trees and the dappled sunlight of a private garden in East Sussex, Toad Hall emerges—a structure of quiet grace, imbued with the essence of the natural world. This bespoke timber-framed retreat is as much a reflection of its surroundings as it is a space for inspiration, contemplation, and connection.

Toad Hall was born of a vision: to create a garden structure that feels as though it has always been there. Its timber frame rises lightly from the earth, blending seamlessly into the landscape, an extension of the flora that surrounds it. Every beam and joint tells a story of the trees tthey are made of. Key Elements of the Design:

Natural Materials: Locally sourced timbers—chosen for their beauty and integrity—form the soul of the structure. Their textures , and shadows echo the forest from which it came.

Timeless Craftsmanship
: The design evolved organically, shaped by the interplay between vision and practicality, nature and craft.

A Place of Stillness
: Whether for quiet reflection or lively gatherings, Toad Hall adapts to the rhythms of life, providing a sanctuary in every season.

As the designer and maker, we approached this project as a dialogue—between ourselves, the client, and the material itself. We worked closely with the client to translate their dreams into a tangible form, sketching and refining until the design felt like a natural fit for its surroundings. Guided by a commitment to sustainability, we sourced and prepared local timber, celebrating its imperfections and letting its character guide the form. Every cut and join was made with care, balancing precision with intuition to bring the structure to life. Throughout, Rural Workshop ensured that Toad Hall retained its spirit—an organic, living presence rooted in its place.

T
oad Hall is more than a structure; it is an ode to nature and a sanctuary for the soul. Standing quietly in its garden, it invites all who enter to pause, to breathe, and to be present. In its beams and shadows, in its stillness and its strength, it holds the promise of timelessness—a space both of its moment and beyond it.

In the workshop and on-site installation

The clients had originally asked for design ideas to install an Oak framed Veranda style addition to the back of the house.
Below is a sketch and basic CAD drawings that allowed for material and labour estimates to be calculated.
